Item 1 Mr. Bishop, Board President, called the
meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.
Item 2 Invocation / Pledge.
Omitted.
Item 3 Public Forum.
HS
Teacher Susan Lowery read a prepared statement listing five reasons that
students should
be required to meet local and state requirements before being allowed to
participate
in commencement ceremonies. HS Teacher/Coach
Ronnie Casey expressed
that he felt students who had met local requirements but not the state's
should
be allowed to participate in commencement ceremonies.
Item 4 Consider / Approve Revision to Local
Policy FMH (Local) - Commencement
Exercises.
Superintendent
Lee explained that the more rigorous testing (4 tests instead of 3)
this
year at the 11th grade level (used to be 10th) has caused a statewide problem
with 11% of all Texas seniors not passing all 4 tests. He then presented a survey he
took
showing that 12 of 15 small schools and 3 of 7 large schools in this area have a
similar policy to ours which requires students to meet all state and local graduation
requirements in order to be eligible to participate in commencement
ceremonies. Denise Shetter moved,
seconded by Helen Romeiser, to approve revision of Local Policy FMH to allow
students who have satisfactorily completed all coursework requirements for
graduation but have failed to meet applicable exit-level testing requirements
to participate in commencement activities and ceremonies. Those voting in favor of the motion
were Denise Shetter, Helen Romeiser, Tommy Bishop and Manuel Cadena. Those voting against the motion
were Sandy Hubbard and Jerry Smith. Motion passed.
Item 5 Jerry Smith moved, seconded by Sandy
Hubbard, to adjourn the meeting.
Adopted
unanimously. Time: 5:15 p.m.
